I'd say the number one mistake I see made in everyday photographs is that the person who snapped the photo was standing too far back from the subject(s). I understand we all don't have fancy zoom lenses, so my suggestion is to walk up to your subject and try taking the photo from a closer perspective. Generally, the shoes aren't an important part of the story so try cropping at the knees, stomach or even shoulders for those fun individual moments. Play around with it and have fun!
